The City of Newport Beach is seeking an accomplished, highly visible, and approachable leader to serve as Deputy Police Chief. The ideal candidate will possess deep knowledge of modern municipal police administration, law enforcement operations, and crime prevention strategies, along with extensive experience in personnel management, leadership, and administrative functions. Selection Components:
Application Evaluation:Applications will be accepted until Tuesday, February 3, 2026 at 5:00 p.m. The most qualified candidates will be invited to an assessment center. Candidates are required to submit a resume along with a completed online application in order for the application package to be considered complete.
Assessment Center: Interviews are tentatively scheduled for Thursday, March 5, 2026. Passing applicants will be placed on an eligibility list that may be used to fill future full-time vacancies.
EXPERIENCE: Eight or more years of progressively responsible law enforcement work experience, including six years combined managerial and supervisory experience, three of which must be at the level of Police Lieutenant or above.
EDUCATION: Equivalent to completion of a bachelor's degree in criminal justice, law, management, public administration, or other related field. Master's degree is desirable.
LICENSE AND CERTIFICATE:Due to the performance of some field duties which require the operation of a personal or City vehicle, a valid and appropriate California driver's license and an acceptable driving record are required.
The Newport Beach Police Department is a team of officers and professional staff who are committed to our community. We proudly serve every resident, visitor, and business community member in the city of Newport Beach. Operationally, we divide the city into four separate areas. Each area has an assigned lieutenant, who acts as an area commander.
Area commanders work closely with their communities to address the unique needs of each section of the city. They diligently monitor statistics and activity in their assigned area, track any emerging crime trends, and direct resources to address topics of concern. They also attend community meetings, develop relationships, and form a deep understanding of the specific concerns of residents, businesses, and visitors in each part of town.
