The City of Porterville, lying at the foothills of the Sierras, was incorporated in 1902. The City is currently transitioning its method of election from an at-large system to a by-district system with five separate districts. The City Council is comprised of five members who are elected by their respective districts to serve overlapping four-year terms. Porterville is located on State Route 65, 165 miles from Los Angeles. The City has a strategic central location to major markets and a ready access to major transportation routes. Porterville is the center of a large farming area noted especially for citrus and livestock. The Police Department is staffed with 79 Sworn Officers working in conjunction with 33 full-time civilian employees.
