Police Officers are the primary representatives of the University of California Police Department, directly responsible for delivery of public safety and law enforcement services on and near the campus and other properties owned, controlled or occupied by the University.
Police Officers work under the supervision of, and report directly to, a Sergeant of Police or Lieutenant. Police Officers must work independently as well as collaboratively, carrying out instructions and self-initiating activity in a manner consistent with law, regulations, department policies and standard procedures.
Police Officers engage in preventative patrols on foot, bicycle, motorcycle, and by vehicle, and respond to calls for service from University affiliates and the general public. They make arrests, conduct thorough investigations, prepare necessary documentation and testify in court. They maintain custody of and arrange for the proper disposition of evidence, contraband and lost & found property. Police Officers may work with civilian and other law enforcement agencies to provide for security and safety of persons and property at University ceremonies and events, and serve as a proactive resource to a uniquely diverse community.
The ideal candidate will have demonstrated a detailed and fundamental knowledge of modern police methods, practices and techniques with particular emphasis on the university environment; skills in working as part of a diverse team; ability to motivate others to effectively achieve department goals and objectives; ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with department members, neighboring agencies, and the campus community; possess excellent interpersonal skills and organizational skills; the ability to effectively communicate, orally and in writing to all levels of the organization; knowledge of relevant university-wide police policies and procedures; a strong commitment to cultural, gender and racial diversity, professional ethics and integrity, and understanding of and commitment to community-oriented policing, a self-starting and self-motivated work ethic, and a reliable attendance record.
Police Officers may routinely work evening, night and weekend shifts, and all officers can be required to work mandatory overtime assignments, to attend off-site training and to provide mutual aid to other agencies or locations, based on the needs of the department, and with little or no notice. Must possess a current California Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) Basic Certificate issued by the Commission on Peace Officers' Standards and Training OR possess a POST Academy Certificate, OR be currently enrolled in a CA POST law enforcement academy with an anticipated graduation within the next six( 6) months. Those awarded a POST Basic Certificate and have a three-year or longer break in service must have a current certificate through a POST requalification course.
Must pass background investigation to ensure applicant is of good moral character [GC 1031(d)] and free of any physical, emotional, or mental conditions that might adversely affect the exercise of the powers of a peace officer [GC§1031(f)] so that nothing in his/her background is inconsistent with performing peace officer duties. The background investigation is also conducted to ensure that the applicant meets the minimum selection requirements of Commission Regulation 1953 and Government Code Section 1031. Applicant will be subjected to an identity/fingerprint check and criminal history check; Felony convictions or certain misdemeanor convictions that are disqualifying per CA GC sections 1029, 1030, 1031 (c), California Penal Code section 29805, and 18 USC 922 (d) (9); physical ability testing, drug screening, medical screening, psychological testing, treadmill stress test, and may be subject to a deception detection examination such as a polygraph or voice stress test, and/or a pre-offer personality test.
Multiple Police Officer positions available: Continuous recruitment, applications will be accepted on an on-going basis; Interviews will be conducted and individuals hired as needed.
Step 1- Minimum Qualifications: Applicants must meet the required qualifications: graduation from an accredited CA Police Academy, ability to work a schedule that may include nights, weekends, holidays and overtime, ability to meet California POST minimum standards.
Step 2- Personal History Questionnaire: Applicants who meet the qualifications in Step 1 must complete the Personal History Questionnaire (PHQ). A deception detection examination (polygraph or voice stress test) may be required. PHQ results, and deception detection exam results will determine applicant suitability for continued consideration.
Step 3- Oral interview & written exam: Applicants who successfully meet requirements in Steps 1 and 2 will be invited to a panel interview with the UCSC PD and take a timed written exam - grammar, spelling, and structure will be evaluated as well as the review of the investigative actions taken. Upon successful completion of Step 3, the panel will recommend applicants for Step 4.
Step 4- Oral interview with the Chief
Step 5- Personal History Statement: Upon successful completion of Steps 3 & 4, applicants will complete a PHS-Peace Officer POST 2-251 form used for background investigation purposes in accordance with POST regulation 1002.
Step 6- UCSC PD Background Investigation: UCSC certified POST background investigators will conduct the background investigation on applicants who successfully complete Steps 1 through 5.
Step 7- Conditional Job Offer: Applicants who successfully meet the requirements of all steps above may be considered for the position. Selected candidate(s) will receive a conditional job offer contingent upon the successful completion of the pre-employment background investigations: psychological evaluation, pre-employment physical exam, and live scan.
Step 8- Formal Job Offer: Selected candidates can expect a formal job offer once results from the psychological evaluation, physical exam, and live scan confirm suitability for employment.
UNIFORM ALLOWANCE: Officers are eligible for a $1,000/year paid annually in July.
WAGE ADJUSTMENTS: Wage ranges shall be increased by 3% in the Fiscal Year 2018-19, 2019-20 and 2020-21
PERFORMANCE-BASED STEP INCREASES: Salary ranges are step-based starting at $36.02/hr. up to $45.26/hr. Officer shall receive a minimum one step increase upon satisfactory completion of their probationary period. Thereafter, officers shall receive a minimum one step increase on the anniversary of the completion of their probationary period contingent upon satisfactory or better performance.
POST PAY: Officers who possess a POST Intermediate Certificate shall receive an additional 4% above their base wage. Officers who possess a POST Advanced Certificate shall receive additional 8% above their base wage.
SPECIALTY PAY: Officers assigned to special assignments will receive an additional 5% above their base wage while assigned.
SHIFT DIFFERENTIAL: Effective July 29, 2018, employees who work applicable evening shift hours will receive an additional $1.50/hr. for all time worked.
Demonstrated ability to analyze situations and take quick, effective, and reasonable action to prevent injury, loss of life, or destruction of property.
Proficiency in the use and care of a variety of weapons (i.e. firearm, rifle, baton, OC, etc.). Ability to maintain PC 832 Arrest qualifications.
Knowledge of Police operating rules and regulations.
Knowledge of basic law enforcement terminology and concepts.
Experience in the exercise of defensive tactics.
