Knowledge of modern police methods, procedures and administrative practices including, statutes and regulations relating to the rights of persons, rules of evidence, and search and seizure; of recent court decisions affecting the work of a police department; of departmental procedures, regulations and organization; of principles and practices of police personnel administration and supervision; and of budget planning and administration.
Ability to plan, organize and direct the work of a major functional unit within the Police Department; to analyze law enforcement problems accurately and adopt effective courses of action; to recommend improvements in departmental operations, rules and policies; to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; to prepare clear, concise, and comprehensive written reports; to establish and maintain cooperative and effective relationships with those contracted in the course of work; and to meet the physical requirements established by the department.
Education and Experience - Any combination equivalent to experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Education: Equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college with major coursework in Police Science or a related field.
Experience: Four (4) years of experience in law enforcement work including two (2) years of experience in a position equivalent to Police Sergeant in the City of Dixon.
Possession of a P.O.S.T. Intermediate Certificate is required; a P.O.S.T. Advanced Certificate and P.O.S.T. Supervisor’s Certificate are desirable.
A valid California Driver's License and a satisfactory driving record are conditions of initial and continued employment.
Must successfully complete a background investigation as a condition of initial employment with Dixon Police Department.

Successful candidate is eligible for prior service credit for vacation accrual; 104 hours of administrative leave; Education, Physical Fitness, Bilingual Incentives available; Excellent Monthly Benefit Allowance or stipend available; CalPERS RETIREMENT – 3% @ 55 benefit formula for members hired after 11/20/11 or 2.7% @ 57 formula for PEPRA members; New contract will be negotiated in 2019.
