The Elk Grove Police Department is seeking an experienced, innovative and knowledgeable law enforcement professional with proven leadership, managerial and interpersonal skills to serve as Police Captain. This recruitment will establish an eligibility list. The Elk Grove Police Department currently consists of the Police Chief, 2 Captains, 7 Lieutenants, 18 Sergeants, 113 Officers and 90 support staff. The primary divisions are: Administrative Services, Field Services, Investigative Services and Support Services. The “Community Oriented Policing and Problem Solving” (COPPS) philosophy was adopted as the primary law enforcement approach. The Police Captain will report directly to the Police Chief, will plan, direct, supervise, and coordinate the activities of a division or section of the Police Department; and will provide highly responsible and complex administrative support to the Police Chief.
EDUCATION/TRAINING: A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent from an accredited college or university with major coursework in police science and administration, public administration, business administration, political science, or a related field. A Master’s degree, graduation from the FBI National Academy, POST Command College, or a similarly accredited executive leadership program is desirable.
EXPERIENCE: Three (3) years of increasingly responsible experience in a middle management capacity in a municipal or county law enforcement agency, including at least three years of supervisory responsibility. Candidates must be at the rank of Lieutenant or higher in a comparable law enforcement agency.
