THE POLICE OFFICER RECRUIT is a non-safety (non-sworn with new hires paying employee share of PERS Miscellaneous Retirement) trainee position in the Police Department. Under immediate supervision, the successful candidate attends a Peace Officers Standards and Training approved basic police academy (fully sponsored by the City of Brea); and performs other related duties as assigned. During training, incumbents do not have police powers, but are subject to the rules and regulations of the Brea Police Department and the police academy attended. Promotion to Police Officer is contingent upon successful completion of the basic academy, the results of a thorough background investigation, and the recommendation of the Police Chief.
POLICE OFFICER, $6,158 - $7,884 per month plus excellent benefits including PERS 2.7%@57 retirement. New hires pay the PERS required 50% of “Normal Cost” share of PERS Safety Retirement (this rate will vary over time). Under general supervision, performs the full range of law enforcement and crime prevention duties; controls traffic flow and enforces State and local traffic laws; performs investigative work; performs a variety of technical law enforcement tasks; conducts and makes presentations at community meetings; and performs other duties as assigned.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS FOR THE POLICE OFFICER RECRUIT may include, but are not limited to, the following: Attends a Peace Officers Standards and Training approved basic police academy which includes classroom and field training. May be assigned non-safety duties in the Brea Police Department.
Candidates for Police Officer Recruit must possess all of the following:
1. A high school diploma or the G.E.D. equivalent. 2. A valid California Driver license. 3. No felony convictions or misdemeanor convictions involving moral turpitude.
4. Twenty-one years of age or older at time of appointment as a sworn Police Officer.
