DEFINITION: To provide related community services, carry out special assignments, and patrol an assigned area. Works an assigned shift and performs various law enforcement duties including the protection of persons and property, the prevention and investigation of crimes; the apprehension of law violators; resolves community problems; maintains community safety and security; controls traffic flow and enforces State and local traffic regulations.
APPLICATION PROCEDURE: Application must be made using the following procedure.
1. Enter the City website at www.newportbeachca.gov, click on Jobs, click on City Employment Opportunities, locate the Police Officer - Recruit and complete the online application in full, including job history. Resumes will NOT be accepted in lieu of an application. Candidates with incomplete applications will not be able to progress to the Written Test. 2. Submit the electronic application by clicking the accept button.
Emails will be sent to the registered email address for all steps in the recruitment process. Candidates should always check their email for confirmation of the next step in the process. Phone inquiries will not be accepted.
Those applicants with disabilities requiring reasonable accommodation for any portion of the testing process must notify the Human Resources Department at least (5) days in advance of the test.
SELECTION COMPONENTS: 1. Multiple-Choice Written Exam - Pass/Fail - Tentatively scheduled for April 20, 2018. Highest scores above 70% will advance to the next phase of the testing process which is the Physical Agility Testing (PAT). PLEASE NOTE: The PELLETB exam will NOT be utilized and other agency/POST scores or T-scores will not be accepted.
2. Physical Agility Test (PAT) - Pass/Fail - Tentatively scheduled for April 28, 2018
Top-scoring applicants that pass the Physical Agility Test will be invited to an Oral Interview.
3. Oral Interview - 100% of Overall Score - Tentatively scheduled for May 1-3, 2018.
Candidates will be placed on an eligibility list and may be invited to begin the background process as positions become available. Final selection will be made by the Police Chief according to Civil Service Rules & Regulations. Prior to any offer of employment, a thorough background investigation will be conducted.
Applications will be accepted on a continuous basis with the first review date of March 1, 2018. The first 250 applications received by this review date that pass the screening process will be invited to the Written Exam tentatively scheduled for Friday, April 20, 2018.
EXPERIENCE & TRAINING AND LICENSE/CERTIFICATE:
Recruit: Must have the ability to successfully complete a California POST Basic Academy and the City of Newport Beach Police Department Field Training Program. Training: Equivalent to the completion of twelfth grade. College level coursework or other specialized training in police science, psychology, public administration or related field is highly desirable. LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE: Possession of a valid California driver's license at the time of appointment. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Minimum age at time of appointment is 20.5 years. Must be a US citizen or permanent resident alien who is eligible for and has applied for US citizenship. Record must be free from conviction of any felony or misdemeanor involving moral turpitude or domestic violence, and from an excessive number of citations for traffic violations. Background history should indicate responsibility, dependability, honesty, integrity, acceptable communication skills, good judgment and the ability to relate well to others. All employees hired after January 1, 1999, shall not smoke or use tobacco products at anytime while on or off duty.
